Walk of the Planets
Join beloved Professor Harold Williams as he takes you on a walk of the solar from the Sun to Pluto (we still love Pluto, we couldn't leave him out) and experience its scale without leaving Kensington. Guaranteed to burn up some festival food calories!
Walks will take place periodically throughout the afternoon
The walk is based on Guy Ottewell's (Furman University) pamphlet: The Thousand Yard Model or, The Earth as a Peppercorn. Prof. Williams has changed only a few of the token objects in the solar system so they are all edible, though some are not particularly palatable. Which planet will be a peppercorn and how big is the ball we will use for the Sun? I want to find out which is the chocolate covered cherry myself!
An undeclared city treasure of Takoma Park, MD, Harold has been the director of the Montgomery College Planetarium since 1990. An astrophysicist and astronomy professor, he brings the universe to life under the dome in the only astronomy 101 classroom in Maryland which is taught in a planetarium. A member of National Capitol Astronomers, he has a deep and abiding interest in astrolabes
